Antique incense burner of refined make, dating from the end of the 19th century, worked with great skill in finely chased bronze and brass alloy.
- The work shows the ruins of Dryburgh Abbey, on the banks of the river Tweed in Scotland. The scene has an evocative, historical atmosphere.
- DescriptionThe abbey was built between 1150 and 1152 by Hugh de Morville for the Premonstratensian monks. Over the centuries it suffered repeated destruction and fires, among them the English attacks of 1322, 1385 and 1544.
- Measurements: 40 x 120 cm
- Colour: In 1786 the ruins were bought by the 11th Earl of Buchan, founder of the Society of Antiquaries.
- Make: The print is in greyscale. The finely carved frame has elegant golden shades that set off the work.
