Cookie policy

What they are

Cookies are small files a site leaves on your device to remember something from one page to the next: that you put a piece in the basket, that you signed in, which language you are reading. Alongside cookies there are technologies that do the same job in another way, such as the browser's local storage, and in law they count the same.

The three categories

Necessary. They hold the site up: the basket, the session of someone signed in, the chosen language, the protection of forms against automated submissions, and the memory of the choice you make on the banner. Without them the site does not work, which is why the law does not require consent.

Statistics. They would serve to understand, in aggregate form, which pages are looked at and where visitors come from. We use none today.

Marketing. They would serve to measure advertising campaigns and to show more relevant ads elsewhere. We use none today.

What you actually find

• Session and basket — they hold your visit together and remember what you put in the basket. They last as long as the visit, or up to thirty days if you chose to stay signed in.
• Language — remembers which language you are reading, so you need not choose again. One year.
• Cookie choice — remembers what you answered on the banner, so it is not asked again on every page. Six months.
• Stripe — during payment, to recognise the device and block fraud. These are technical cookies of the payment service and appear only when you reach the checkout.

Changing your mind

The choice you made on the banner is not final. You can revisit it whenever you like from the «Cookie preferences» link at the bottom of every page: the panel reopens and from there you can switch the non-necessary categories on or off.

You can also act from your browser, which lets you block or delete a site's cookies. Bear in mind that blocking the necessary ones stops the basket and the sign-in from working — that is a technical consequence, not a punishment.

Who else is involved

The only third party that can leave anything on your device today is Stripe, and only at the moment of payment. For the fraud-prevention part it acts as an independent controller: its rules are at stripe.com/privacy.
