Oil painting on canvas showing Saint Bonaventure of Bagnoregio, Franciscan cardinal and important theologian of the 13th century, represented according to the traditional iconography.

The Saint is shown half-length, in the Franciscan habit enriched by a cope and the red cardinal's mozzetta, symbols of his church rank. On his head he wears the red biretta, the typical attribute of cardinals.

The sober, neutral background sets off the figure, while the painting shows particular care in the details of the vestments and in the expressiveness of the face.

Saint Bonaventure is also known as one of the main biographers of Saint Francis of Assisi: Giotto drew on his work for the cycle of Franciscan stories in the Basilica of Assisi.

The painting shows slight marks of time but is on the whole in good condition.
