The piece, restrained but authoritative in its presence, embodies the spirit of the Empire perfectly: monumental elegance without excess, strict proportions and a balance between function and ornament.
In the upper part is a fall front which, when opened, reveals a writing surface; inside there are three decorative orders. At the top open twelve pigeonholes, usually used for filing letters or documents, marked out by four fine ebony columns with bronze capitals and bases resting on three drawers that act as a base. The columns frame a portico giving onto a secret door; below the small drawers, two further hidden spaces open at the sides. In the lower part are three large drawers veneered in walnut burl. Two large columns with original period bronzes frame the piece. - Measurements: 96x60x100cm
