Genuine antique print in a carved gilded frame, titled «Ruins of the old Dryburgh Abbey in Scotland».

The work shows the ruins of Dryburgh Abbey, on the banks of the river Tweed in Scotland. The scene has an evocative, historical atmosphere.

The abbey was built between 1150 and 1152 by Hugh de Morville for the Premonstratensian monks. Over the centuries it suffered repeated destruction and fires, among them the English attacks of 1322, 1385 and 1544.

In 1786 the ruins were bought by the 11th Earl of Buchan, founder of the Society of Antiquaries.

The print is in greyscale. The frame, finely carved, has elegant gilded shading that sets off the work.
